Cawdor House is an ideal base for touring and exploring the Highlands of Scotland.
Within a few minutes drive from the house are many important historic attractions such as:

  • Cawdor Castle - a taste of Scotland's medieval past made famous for that Scottish play (Shakepeare's MacBeth)
  • Culloden Battlefield - the site of the last pitched battle fought on British soil, ending Bonnie Prince Charlie's hopes of the throne in 1746
Cawdor Castle
  • Fort George - a mightly military fortress and home to the Queen's Own Highlanders museum
  • Brodie Castle - owned by the National Trust of Scotland after 700 years in the Brodie family.
  • Randolph's Leap - enjoy a leisurely stroll along the banks of the River Findhorn, and browse the curios at nearby Logie Steading

Slightly further afield but within an hour's drive through the most breathtaking scenery
you can explore any of the following in a day:
Urquhart Castle
  • Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness - take a boat trip to try and see the famous Loch Ness monster.
  • Across the Moray Firth is the magnificent Dunrobin Castle and Gardens on the North Sea coast at Golspie. Stop off on the way at Rogie Falls to watch the salmon jumping or shop in the new Harrods store at the Falls of Shin visitor centre.
  • Head west right across the Highlands to Eilean Donan Castle and then spend a day on the Isle of Skye.
  • Explore Glen Affric - the most beautiful glen in the Highlands (easy to reach from Loch Ness).
Ballindalloch Castle
  • Go eastwards on the Malt Whisky Trail of Speyside, visit the historic abbey and the world-renowned Johnson's cashmere centre at Elgin.
  • South of here you will find the winter skiing resort of Aviemore. Nearby you can take a ride on the funicular railway up to the top of the Cairngorm mountain range.
  • Ballindalloch Castle - family home of the MacPherson-Grants since 1546. Includes golf course, gardens and children's play area.

During your stay why not research your family history through the special geneaology department at Inverness library.

You could have a framed family crest made for yourselve. Take back heraldry and fond memories of the Highlands of Scotland.
